The dispatching product I work on is intended to be used across multiple screens at once. In order to promote consistency in the workspaces used by an agency's users, we developed a tool called Layout Manager. The tool allows multiple layouts to be created for each screen, with tabs consisting of what we called views. This gave agencies the opportunity to create different workspace configurations for each role type, and ensures that the information users are trained to find is always in the correct location.
Below you will see a walkthrough of creating a workspace, along with an updated version of the tool. Although usability testing for the initial design scored high, users were having trouble keeping track of navigation. The iterated version contains all of the necessary navigation in a header across the top that remains in place throughout the workflow. After testing again, the usability score improved.
